On the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the ruins of ancient Caesarea are picturesquely scattered - the once luxurious Roman "resort" of King Herod, named after his patron Emperor Octavian Augustus.

The city served as a stronghold of the Roman legionaries and the source of the suppression of the Bar Kochba revolt (the anti-Roman uprising in Judea in 132–135 AD).

During the Byzantine period, it became the cultural and spiritual center of the province of Palestine. During the Crusades, it was a major port.

In Caesarea National Park you will see the amphitheatre of King Herod, the Roman Hippodrome, the port of Herod, the grand ruins of the fortress walls.

For Christianity, Caesarea is the place where the apostle Peter first converted the pagan Cornelius to Christ. In Caesarea, the Apostle Paul, the chief distributor of Christianity, was imprisoned, and then from here the Apostle Paul was sent to Rome for trial and execution. Here, during the excavations of Herod’s palace and theater, the only material evidence of the existence of Pontius Pilate was found.

For Judaism, Caesarea is the site of spreading Talmudic traditions, the execution of Rabbi Akiva and a difficult story of survival.

For Islam, it is a place of military operations and landmark events under a multitude of rulers.
