Napa Valley
Napa County is an hour and a half drive from San Francisco. In the language of the Wappo Indians, who settled this valley before the arrival of Europeans, the word Napa means "land of abundance." The unique microclimate of these places, due to gentle mountain slopes, sun and moderate humidity, created a favorable environment for growing grapes. Of the grape varieties in Napa, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay predominate; also winemakers pay much attention to Merlot and Pinot Noir. Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Sira, Sangiovese are also cultivated here. The valley has 373 wineries and produces over 70% of all North American wine.
